A MESSAGE FROM WILDLANDS
Thank you so much for choosing WILDLANDS as your charity of choice once again – It’s great to see some old as well as some new names joining our GREEN TEAM.
To those of you who don’t know me, I’m Buyi Makhoba-Dlamini, the lead campaign driver for WILDLANDS. Assisting me on this campaign is Zandi Mvuyane. We will be your first points of contact should you have any questions about WILDLANDS or the campaign as a whole.
In 2018, we had a successful campaign where runners helped us raise over R500 000 which all went towards our rhino conservation efforts at our Somkhanda Community Game Reserve (BIG 5 Reserve) in Northern KZN. This is a truly special reserve as it is one of the only community-owned reserves which came about through land claims in the early 2000’s and is co-managed by WILDLANDS. The reserve is owned by the Emvokweni Community Trust (the Gumbi people) and they appointed WILDLANDS to assist them in using the land for wildlife conservation.
Somkhanda is a 12 000 hectare reserve which employs over 80 community members employed on a full time basis. It is a WILDLANDS flagship Wildlife Economy project which addresses socio-economic needs of the community and will soon be further developed into an eco-tourism hub which will give more access to the community and provide training to uplift and empower the Gumbi people. Somkhanda is also a WWF Black Rhino Expansion project site and is supported by the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Environmental Monitors and Natural Resources Management Programmes. Through your funds, you will assist us in realising a truly sustainable community that will thrive and conserve its natural heritage for generations to come.
What are your incentives for 2019:
- Adopt-A-Camera Trap - Raise R25 000 and you can adopt one of these strategically placed cameras on the reserve. If you are successful in reaching this target, we will send you a batch of images on a monthly basis (for a year) so you can see what the Somkhanda wildlife gets up to, including the Big 5.
- Adopt-A-Rhino – Raise R30 000 and you can adopt and name your rhino. We will also send you quarterly updates on how it’s getting on as well as images (for a year)
- WILDLIFE EXPERIENCE – This is the top incentive!! Raise R40 000 and you and your partner can join us on a once in a lifetime experience by visiting Somkhanda for a weekend. The date has been set for the 14th – 16th June 2019. Here you will get to witness firsthand the rhino conservation work being done on the reserve by our professional and experienced team where you will witness a dehorning, fitting GPS collars on rhino, wild dog, lion and possibly elephant.
- We will have adhoc boosters which will keep you excited about raising funds throughout the campaign.
